Students. Safety. Service.

Why am I wanting to be a member of the Harris County School Board?
It’s simple. Students. Safety. Service.

Students.

As a parent, it is easy to give commands and expect them to be followed. Ultimately, however, I’ve discovered that my children mimic what they see me do, and not what I have asked them to do.

The same truth applies for this generation. Now formally referred to as, GenZ. Yes, they love their technology, and often feel as if they are the supreme authority due to the “knowledge” at their fingertips, but studies are now showing us that these students crave and will follow genuine leadership when presented with the opportunity.

And there in lies the challenge. Are we giving them examples to emulate, or are we simply making policies that they must follow, with no real first hand knowledge of how it affects our customer base, the students. Are we having conversations with them? Are we meeting them where they are, or are we meeting them where we would like for them to be? Are we looking down from the top, or are standing beside them, showing them how to place each hand and foot in unison until they’ve reached the top of all that the Harris County School System has to offer?

Students. They are why I’m running for Harris County School Board.

Safety.

This word is everywhere. The top of our news feeds. The top of our list when we shop for cars, houses, and even toys. Yet, it seems to have a lesser role in our school system.

In order to gain the trust and confidence of the families and students Harris County serves, the school board must make safety a priority. Granted, there is a uniformed officer at the middle school and one at the high school almost every time I am there. What a blessing! Thank you! And I believe more can and should be done. Fortunately, I was on the school governance team in the Calhoun City School district when the new middle school and high school complex was constructed and completed. What a beautiful example of multiple agencies within Gordon County working together for the common goal of safety. The technology and grants available to schools to help in this area is truly remarkable and should be researched and presented to our schools. I will work hard to see that this a priority and a direction we are constantly heading.

Safety. It is why I am asking for your vote in May.

Service.

In the book, “Same Kind of Different as Me,” by Ron Hall and Denver Moore, Denver shares many heartbreaking stories that truly capture the importance of why we should look beyond the surface of an individual each day and see their value and potential. His understanding of the human heart and what it means to truly serve your fellow man is inspiring.

As I read and reread his vivid experiences, convection of what I was missing in my attitude as I serve my family and how I serve the communities in which I live became evident. Even now, I see that it is time to go deeper. Not just see things on the surface and help when it is convenient, but to become a part of a team that, when unified, can show by example how to succeed and take everyone with us.

Being an active participant on the Harris County School Board would be a natural forward step for me as a parent and member of the Union Community.

I’m grateful that my resume shows my ability work with various groups simultaneously and when there is a need, to fill it and make others aware of the need so that they may participate, as they are able.

Service. It truly is at the center of my heart and my hands and feet are the proof.
